Your royalty split
How much of your store royalties you keep on each plan, what the split is a percentage of, when it changes, and what it never touches.
There are exactly two splits at Run, and which one you are on follows from your plan:
| Plan | You keep | Run keeps |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 70% | The rest, which pays for putting a free release on the stores |
| Artist | 92% | The rest |
| White-label | 92% | The rest |
Both paid plans carry the same split. Paying more does not buy a better one: what the higher plan buys is roster size, your own label and the things in The White-label plan.
What the percentage is of
The split applies to the recording royalties the stores report for your music, which is the figure you see on Earnings as reported. Run’s share comes out of that figure, and what is left is yours.
The earnings page shows the whole calculation rather than a single number: what the stores reported for the period, Run’s share of it, and what that leaves you. That first line is what the stores report as payable for your music, after whatever each of them keeps for itself, and Run’s share is the only thing taken from it afterwards.
Distribution has no fee per release, no fee per store, no fee to take a release down, and no charge for a release that earns nothing. Extra artist or label slots are priced separately from distribution. Mastering is Upcoming and is not yet available.
What it never touches
Run distributes recordings, so the split is on recording royalties and on nothing else. These never pass through Run and Run has no claim on them:
- Publishing. Songwriting and composition royalties, wherever your publisher or collecting society pays them.
- Live. Anything you earn playing.
- Merchandise.
- Sync. Placements in film, television, advertising or games.
You also keep your masters. The agreement you accept is non-exclusive, which means you can leave and take your catalog with you. See Distribution Agreement.
When your split changes
Your split follows the plan you are on at the time a period is recorded, and it applies from that point forward.
- Move to a paid plan and periods recorded from then on carry 92%.
- Downgrade, or let a subscription lapse, and periods recorded from then on carry the free split.
- Periods already recorded keep the split that applied when they were reported. A plan change never reaches back and re-prices history.
That last rule is not a courtesy, it is in the agreement you accepted, and Run records the split with each period so the page cannot quietly re-render an old month at a new rate. If a view spans periods on different terms, it says so rather than implying one split covers everything on screen.
Earnings are reported and shown by period and by release, so the split is applied at the same grain. The rate recorded for a period is the one in force when that period was first reported to you, which is why a plan change moves your split from the next period onwards and leaves everything before it alone. See How earnings work for where the figures come from and why they arrive weeks after the plays.
If a figure looks wrong
The earnings page reports what the stores paid for your music, so a share that reads low usually means a store reported less than you expected rather than that the split moved.
If it still looks wrong, check the release is live everywhere you expect first, then open a request at Support with the release and the period. See Getting help.
